How Malaysian income tax is calculated

Start with your total income for the year (salary × 12 plus bonus). Subtract your reliefs— RM9,000 for everyone, your EPF (capped at RM4,000), SOCSO and EIS (RM350), and whatever you claim for lifestyle, insurance, medical and the rest. What's left is your chargeable income, taxed in bands from 0% to 30%. Chargeable income of RM35,000 or less also gets a RM400 rebate.

Worked example: RM5,000 a month is RM60,000 a year. Reliefs: RM9,000 individual + RM4,000 EPF (you paid RM6,600, capped) + RM350 SOCSO/EIS = RM13,350, so chargeable income is RM46,650. Tax: RM600 on the first RM35,000, plus 6% of the next RM11,650 (RM699) — RM1,299 for the year, about RM108 a month.

The relief most people forget to claim

Lifestyle relief (RM2,500) covers your phone, laptop, books and home internet — things almost everyone buys. At a 6% bracket that's RM150 back; at 19%, RM475. IZ Finance flags relief-eligible spending as you log it and keeps a running YA2026 total, so e-Filing takes minutes. Read our take-home salary guide or try the salary calculator.

Frequently asked

What are the Malaysian income tax rates for YA2026?+

For tax residents: 0% on the first RM5,000 of chargeable income, then 1% (to RM20,000), 3% (to RM35,000), 6% (to RM50,000), 11% (to RM70,000), 19% (to RM100,000), 25% (to RM400,000), 26% (to RM600,000), 28% (to RM2 million) and 30% above that. The rates are the same as YA2025.

What is chargeable income?+

Your total income for the year minus your tax reliefs. Everyone gets the RM9,000 individual relief automatically; your EPF contributions (up to RM4,000) and SOCSO + EIS (up to RM350) count too, plus any reliefs you spent on — lifestyle, sports, medical check-ups, insurance, PRS and more.

Who gets the RM400 tax rebate?+

If your chargeable income is RM35,000 or less, LHDN takes RM400 off your tax. Many fresh graduates end up paying little or no income tax because of it.

Is PCB the same as income tax?+

PCB (Potongan Cukai Bulanan, MTD) is your employer deducting tax from your salary each month in advance. At the end of the year you file with LHDN; if your PCB added up to more than your actual tax — usually because you had reliefs your employer didn't know about — you get a refund.

Is my salary stored anywhere?+

No. Everything is calculated in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
